Dexter-Russell: American-Made Cutlery Since 1818

Dexter-Russell, Inc. is the oldest continuously operating cutlery manufacturer in the United States, with roots dating back to 1818. Founded by Henry Harrington in Southbridge, Massachusetts, the original Harrington Cutlery Company began by producing surgical tools and shoe knives.

In 1884, it introduced the Dexter brand — a line of kitchen and table cutlery that would become synonymous with quality and performance in the professional culinary world.

In 1933, Harrington Cutlery merged with the John Russell Cutlery Company — known for its rugged “Green River Works” frontier knives — to form the Russell Harrington Cutlery Company. This merger brought together two American cutlery pioneers under one roof.

In 2001, the company rebranded as Dexter-Russell, Inc. to highlight its most recognized and trusted brand name.
